Proverbs teach wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Reading a chapter of Proverbs every day will change your life. After all you will be reading the manual for life. Every day we will focus on a verse from the chapter for that day. You can reveive the daily Proverbs verse by email, twitter, facebook, or on the aDailyProverb homepage.

Comment or post your thoughts or experiences as we work through The Book of Proverbs daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly. If you already read a Proverbs chapter a day, let’s hit the reset button and start a new month. If this is going to be your first month reading a chapter a day, get ready for the changes The Lord is going to make in your life in just one short month!

Here are some other Bible versions of Proverbs 1:3

More importantly please pray for one of our Daily Proverb community members, Judy. Her son is need of God’s wisdom, protection, and love. Also, please keep Judy and her family in your prayers as they work through a very difficult time in their lives.

I have shown you the way that makes sense;
I have guided you along the right path.

Proverbs 4:11 CEV

Fathers! Mothers! Consider this noble claim by the wisest parent! Read it again. Will you be able to say these words at the end of your life? Can you say them today? Will God and your children agree with you? What have you done for your children today?

Have you taught your children how to have a long and prosperous life (4:10)? Have you taught them how to avoid the distractions, troubles, and traps of life (4:12)? Mothers, you are not exempted from this privilege and duty (1:8; 4:3; 6:20).

Our proverb has three lessons – the duty, content, and confidence of good parenting and teaching. Read the Preacher’s words, and see all three lessons; and let us apply the lessons today. We must teach; we must teach the right things; we must do it confidently!

Graduating from high school or getting a college degree does not impress the Lord, nor does it help your children. Most pagans have college degrees, and most college graduates are pagans. Only 1% of the saints in history even thought of going to college. These humanistic and worldly goals of the N.E.A. are foreign to Heaven and true success! The excellent spirit of Daniel and the unfeigned faith of Timothy are what we must cultivate!

The “way of wisdom” and “right paths” are contrary to a liberal arts education. These things, which lead to pleasing God and man in life, are no longer taught. The scope and sequence of today’s schools is a curriculum from hell to make little humanists. Parents, we must teach wisdom and true knowledge at home! Neither is the pastor responsible, for a few hours a week does not approach the daily instruction of faithful parents.

Are your children gracious? Very diligent at work? With high energy and focus? With sterling character? With financial wisdom? Do they hate sin? Being late? Injustice? Are they socially skilled? Good communicators? Considerate and generous? Do they know the gospel? False doctrine? How to solve problems Scripturally? Is their word as good as gold? Are they merciful and forgiving? Wise and prudent? Holy and pure? Are they esteemed in the real world? Are their names honored? Do they have many friends?

Parent, are you confident like the father in our proverb? Our Creator did not give us the truth for us to apologize for it or minimize it. Read Job 32 and see the godly confidence of Elihu. We must be bold, dogmatic, and critical; for Satan and the world surely are in their efforts to oppose us and abolish truth. We have the only answers, and we should say so. And we should reject anything to the contrary (Ps 119:128; Is 8:20).

Fathers, what will you give your family tonight? Read a chapter of Proverbs and explain one verse to them. Every man can do this. One such small point made each day will soon form a mountain of wisdom. If you do not believe this, watch the ants in your yard!

Our lesson here is not a suggestion for fathers – it is a commandment (Eph 6:4). Let every man fulfill his charge from Heaven, and let him see the future with the eye of faith. A godly seed to God’s glory, the defense of the faith, and the happiness of our families is well worth it. Consider the duty, the content, and the confidence of teaching; and do it!

A cheerful look brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones.

Proverbs 15:30 NIV

We are mobile today in Knoxville TN. Our son Cooper has that cheerful look and the light in his eyes and as the Proverb predicts it does bring joy to the heart. Not just his heart but also mine. Today we are going to meet his favorite band, Third Day. When he received the good news the other day, it sure did bring “health to his bones.”

Coop knows every Third Day song by heart and when the boys sing some of their songs, especially Cry Out To Jesus, the sound is pure, innocent, and sweet. There is so much on TV and radio that kids should not watch or listen to. Even some of the stuff that is supposed to be for kids is nothing more than MTV for a younger crowd. So how did Third Day become his favorite group. After all unless you put some energy into it, there is not a lot of radio or TV stations that play Christian music.

A lot of the credit goes to my wife, Brandi. I grew up with rap, rock, and pop. I wouldn’t let our children listen to the music I did but through Brandi I realized they never heard ME listen to the music I wanted them to listen to. A couple of years ago I forced myself to listen to KLOVE and GMT. It wasn’t long until I was singing songs from Jeremy Camp, Casting Crowns, and other Christian artist. Today most of the songs on my iPhone are Christian and Gospel. Throw in some good uplifting country songs, sermons, and the Daily Audio Bible, and my music collection made a 180. I don’t miss my old music collection because none of the songs I use to fill my hears with lifted me up. Pimping in the hood does not tend to make the soul rise, at least mine anyway.

There isn’t a song in my old library that my son could sing that would fill my heart with the amount of faith, peace and joy I will receive tonight when my son is singing songs of praise to our Lord with my wife, the rest of the family, our preacher, and thousands of voices and hands giving glory to our God. Rise Up My Friends!

A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.

Proverbs 14:30 NIV

Be Thankful For What You Have
If you are reading this, there are literally millions of people who would trade places with you. They envy you and would be very grateful to enjoy all that you do. Usually the more someone has, the less thankful they become.

So how can you overcome ingratitude? Only by changing your beliefs. As long as you believe you’re getting a raw deal, or less than you deserve, you will never become a thankful person.

COLOSSIANS 3:15 CEV
15 Each one of you is part of the body of Christ, and you were chosen to live together in peace. So let the peace that comes from Christ control your thoughts. And be grateful.

An attitude of gratitude is the result of what we focus on.

Remember, you deserved punishment. Instead, God gave you what He deserved, and EVERYTHING you have — every breath — is a gift. Keep this in focus and you will become a thankful person.

(An extra bonus is that a thankful person is a happy person.)

HEBREWS 13:5 NIV
5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

What could be greater? Almighty God promises to always take care of you! Never will you be forsaken! Never will you be left facing life all alone! (You may feel forsaken, but it’s a lie.)

A rewarding, satisfying, and fulfilling life does not depend on being rich. Jesus is the one who told us, and He knows.

LUKE 12:15 LB
15 Beware! Don’t always be wishing for what you don’t have. For real life and real living are not related to how rich we are.”

SAY THIS: I will be thankful.

If you reject God’s teaching, you will pay the price; if you obey his commands, you will be rewarded.

Proverbs 13:13 CEV

How great is the difference between being destroyed and being rewarded? How much greater when the LORD does both the destroying and rewarding? The difference is enormous! But the conditions for being rewarded are clear and easy! Thank you, Lord! If you despise His Word, you will be destroyed. If you fear His Word, you will be blessed.

The God of heaven is holy and jealous (Josh 24:19). He will not forgive or overlook those who despise or reject His word. Since He is the Creator of all things, including every man, woman, and child, He expects their total submission and obedience to Him. His first commandment justly demands your absolute and total love for Him (Deut 6:4-5).

About 1650 years after creation, or about 4400 years ago, God drowned and suffocated the earth with a flood of water (Gen 7:4,23). What brought His great destruction on the earth and the human family? They had despised His word and corrupted His way on the earth (Gen 6:5-7,11-12). He sent Noah to preach and warn them, but they rebelled against the commandments of their Creator, so He destroyed them (I Pet 3:18-20; II Pet 2:5).

God sent another preacher to Pharaoh, King of Egypt, about 3530 years ago. The Hebrews, worshippers of the living and true God, were slave laborers for Pharaoh. Moses brought God’s request for Pharaoh to let His people go to Canaan. When Pharaoh despised the word, God ravaged the land with ten plagues and destroyed his army and him in the Red Sea (Ex 5:2; 12:29-36; 14:28). The lesson of the proverb is clear!

King Ahab despised the word of the Lord, so God destroyed him in battle with a chance arrow (I Kgs 22:1-40). King Uzziah despised God’s word that only the priests were to serve in the temple, so God destroyed him with leprosy (II Chron 26:16-23). King Jehoiakim thought he could burn the word of God and get rid of its warnings, so God destroyed him and his family and gave him the burial of an ass (Jer 36:1-32; 22:18-19)!

But the proverb also promises reward to those who fear God’s commandments. This is not servile terror, but rather eager reverence to know and do His will (Ps 1:1-2; 112:1; 119:47-48; Is 6:8; Acts 9:1-6). Though the LORD God is very great, He will bless and reward those who humbly tremble before His word (Is 66:1-2; Acts 17:11; Heb 11:6).

Fearing God and keeping His commandments is the whole duty of man (Eccl 12:13-14). But there is also great reward in keeping them (Ps 1:1-6; 19:11; 37:4; 84:11; 112:1-3), which God’s saints have experienced in all circumstances, such as Abram in Canaan (Gen 13:1-6), Isaac in Canaan (Gen 26:12-14), Joseph in Egypt (Gen 39:1-23), Ruth in Bethlehem (Ruth 2:3), Rehoboam in Jerusalem (II Chr 12:12), Manasseh in Babylon, (II Chr 33:12-13), Esther in Shushan (Es 2:17), and Daniel in Babylon (Dan 1:1-21).

What have you done with the preachers God has sent you? Paul warned against despising prophesying, or preaching (I Thess 5:20). And he foretold irremediable judgment on those who despise or neglect it (Heb 2:1-4; 10:26-31; 12:25). It is your solemn duty and great reward to fear the word of the Lord. The lesson of the proverb is clear!
When we are on the wrong path, we may not want him to watch. When we are on right path we want everyone to watch.

There will always be people who think they walk on water and there always has been. Jesus, who did walk on water, ran into people like this too. Jesus had a lot to say about the Pharisees because they only thought they were on the right path and would criticize everyone they thought was on the wrong path, including Jesus. The sinners, who knew they were on the wrong path but wanted to be viewed by God, and not people, as being on the right path were the people that Jesus could help.

We are all sinners so we need God to watch our paths. Which path is better? Thinking we are on the right path but blinded by pride and following the wrong path or asking God daily to change our ways and lead us down his path, the right path?

Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.

Proverbs 3:3 NIV

Bible verse high school football banners banned
Tonight I read an article online, it said something about a high school in Fort Oglethorpe, GA. It drew my attention because my friend since high school, now lives there with her husband where they both teach at a high school. It turned out to be one of the most uplifting things I could have noticed because tonight I am on fire to bring glory to God. I wish I could feel this fire all the time. I may not have it as much as I would like but I have it right now.

The article and video are about how the cheerleaders were forced to change the banner the high school football players run through at the beginning of their games and the response by them and the Fort Oglethorpe, GA community to this demand.

At this school the cheerleaders put a different Bible verse, every week, on a banner for the football players to run through. It has been a tradition for them since the 9/11 terror attacks. This week they have been banned from carrying out an 8 year tradition because a parent complained to the school superintendent so for legal purposes they are no longer allowed to display bible verses.

I initially found it very sad, then I had some anger, but then I found something in this that brings tremendous joy to my heart and I am sure a smile to God’s face. The football players, cheerleaders, student body, and towns people are not saying “I am sorry, if it offends someone it won’t happen again.” They are standing up for what they believe in.

The school body and towns people showed where they stand on the ban of Bible verses on the field earlier in the week when hundreds turned out for a pep rally with signs covered in scripture. The best part came on game day, when students poured into the school early Friday morning in cars with painted on bible verses covering them, dressed in t-shirts displaying verses written on them, and instead of painting their favorite player’s number on their faces they had their favorite book, chapter, and verse.

I thought it couldn’t get any better, but then game time came and a crowd of over 500 students and fans came out to show their support equipped with signs displaying phrases like Praise Jesus, He Reigns, and signs with Bible verses were everywhere. Some male students had even painted there bodies red and had Bible verses written in white all over there bodies. Others wore shirts written with scripture. All these people were displaying their love and faithfulness to our holy, gracious, and always loving God, some literally with it written on their hearts.

My friend said it was a heart filling display of a community coming together in the name of Jesus and love for our Savior. It was also a media frenzy with not only local news, but national news cameras galore.

This all started with these students, teenagers that are often written off for not caring about God or his word. Our society seems to set these kids up to have wild, crazy fun. Some say it is what you are suppose to do when your young, so party it up. Life isn’t about that, it is about bringing glory to God, honoring him with all your heart and soul.

The cheerleaders might not have banners with Bible verses anymore, but the parking lots, stadium stands, fans, signs, and town are going to be covered in scripture. All Living Faith Out loud!

God keeps his distance from the wicked; he closely attends to the prayers of God-loyal people.

Proverbs 15:29 MSG

Tomorrow we will return to our normal routine and post day 3. Today we wanted to simply say thank you for the comments and prayers over the last few days.

Having people pray for us has been one of the most humbling experiences we have lived through. I can’t say I am glad we had the server problems we did, but I will say that we learned a lot during the process. Not just about analytics and web junk but about who we are, who this site is really about, and how people use Proverbs in their daily life and how they have become a vital part of our daily life. We also learned how loving and caring the community is and how uplifting you have been to me and my wife.

Prayer is so powerful. As todays Proverbs says God listens and attends to the prayers of God-loyal people. I have said many times to people struggling with something in their life that I would pray for them or keep them in my prayers. It has become something I will say, and pray about, but how deeply I pray for them is embarrassing. Do I embrace their problem and pray throughout the day for God to give them resolution or clarity they need, or do I add them as a second thought or list at the end of my prayers?

I was going to post day 2 today but I wanted to share this Proverb instead. My prayers going forward will be more sincere, more in depth, more heartfelt, and more meaningful.
Chris Riehl

The Lord is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.

Proverbs 15:29 KVJ

Patience and gentle talk can convince a ruler and overcome any problem.

Proverbs 25:15 CEV

Wisdom includes ability to persuade those in authority, which is very useful knowledge. The main authorities in life are parents, husbands, employers, government, and pastors. They are moved more by patient reverence than by bold debate. Though your cause might be important and right, wisdom calls for careful and respectful intreaties.
Here is great wisdom for dealing with authority. You will need to persuade an authority of your cause or dissuade one from punishing your offences. Our proverb here deals with persuasion, but the same wisdom serves in dissuasion as well (Eccl 10:4). This rule, learned and remembered, will give great and peaceful skill for dealing with authority.

Our society teaches the opposite of this wisdom, and the results are horrible. Demanding your rights and expecting an authority to cater to your needs and opinions is proud rebellion and creates anarchy. Rather than moving the one in authority toward your cause, it will force him to solidify his position and punish your insolent insubordination.

Human nature is proud, rebellious, and selfish. It assumes all men are created equal and possessing great rights. But the Bible rejects such arrogant rebellion. No two men are created equal, and they are put in the five offices already listed that give them power over other men. God created the offices of authority, and exalting them makes a society great. Disrespect of authority is a widespread problem in our profane and rebellious nation.

Solomon wrote as a monarch, where a king and his princes had great authority. They had the power of life and death, and there was no threat of a hung jury or other limitation to their ruling. The example in our proverb is a prince. Solomon gives divine wisdom to help you persuade a powerful authority to consider your person and cause. Glory!

Forbearing is putting up with disagreement or poor treatment. It is patient longsuffering in the face of adversity. It is used here to describe a patient approach with authority. If you seek to persuade an authority to change, you must wait for them to consider your cause. Impatiently demanding their change will totally work against you. Wait for them.

A soft tongue is a metonym for gentle and respectful speech (15:1). It is so effective that it is described as having the power to break the bones of a prince! Rather than arguing or debating your case, a meek and reverent appeal works far better. Aggressive and harsh words ignore their important office and attack the integrity of their authority. Instead of soberly considering your cause, they will defend their position and rank by rejecting you.

The lower you go in humility, and the higher you lift their person and rank, the greater leverage you have with them. To the degree you protect yourself and dilute this reverent, gentle, and patient approach, you give up leverage. Wisdom is profitable to direct!
David skillfully used this wisdom appealing to King Saul for mercy (I Sam 24:1-22; 26:1-25). And Abigail, a beautiful woman with great understanding, used it to persuade David against revenge, when he was passionately angry against her husband (I Sam 25:1-42). Read these three chapters and focus on the choice of words of David and Abigail.

Child, a respectful and kind letter to parents will work far better than arguing or pouting. Both of these actions indicate you are a spoiled brat and deserve nothing. Thank your parents for their goodness to you, and declare your love and obedience to them. Humbly state your request. Remember to patiently wait for their answer! They do not owe you!

Wife, a reverent and submissive appeal to your husband, carefully chosen for timing and location, will work far better than haughty demands, presumed rights, or sexual deprivation. Remember, he owes you nothing on the spot. Patiently wait for him to consider your request. Sarah and Bathsheba called their husbands lord, and they obtained great requests from powerful men. Godly women give up their “rights” to gain freedom!

Employers and government should be treated the same way. A grievance for working conditions or an assignment is received much better when made with respect and patience than with demands, insubordination, or threats. Everyone knows state troopers respond better to respectful and submissive answers than arrogant and disgusted ones!

The godly application of this wisdom will bring peace and prosperity into your life, and it will exalt godly authority in the earth by its careful and patient respect for their offices. May the Lord Jesus Christ, the Prince of princes, be given all the honor due unto Him!
Jonathan Crosby

By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.

Proverbs 25:15 KJV

Proverbs 19:21 teaches us that God’s purpose for our life will prevail even if we fight it. Every testimony posted here or on the numerous cardboard testimony videos online are from people, like me, who turned to God after realizing our own way wasn’t working.

Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.
Proverbs 19:21 NIV

Just look at the changes God made in the people who posted their “cardboard testimonies” here. Do you think anyone of them would want to go back to who they were before? I may not be where I or God wants me to be but I thank God every day I am not where I used to be. I laugh now when I think of the saying, A Bible that is falling apart usually belongs to a person who isn’t, because the more used my Bible looks the more new I feel.

Many plans are in a man’s mind, but it is the Lord’s purpose for him that will stand.
Proverbs 19:21 AMP
Have you run to God? How has God changed you? Today is your time to share what God has done for you. How has God been your strong tower?

If you are not familiar with cardboard testimonies, watch the video below. People show what they were and then flip their cardboard to show what they become. We share everything that happens to us that is good but when is the last time you shared your testimony, or even part of it? Why do we share the little things that happen to us with anyone that will listen but we rarely share the greatest gift any of us could receive?

Today, share your “cardboard testimony”. Let someone who needs a strong tower know what the Lord has done for you.
